How I became a drummer

The beginning: Keyboard

When I was 9 years old, I was totally indifferent about music. The only music I listened to was Crazy frog. I didn’t really like it, so I listened to music like once a month. Then one day my parents took me to an open day of our local music teaching association. There I got to play keyboard and I thought it was fun, so I started playing keyboard along with my little brother. Fairly soon I was able to play keyboard with very little effort. Which meant I stopped playing keyboard, because it was too easy.

Inline skating: part two

Tuesday, April 16, 2019

Area51 is yet another reason I'm glad I chose Eindhoven to study: it's one of the biggest skate parks of the Netherlands. As my Board year progresses, I've realised more and more what value it has to me. When I'm skating there, time doesn't exist until the park closes. These are some of the rare moments I don't think of all the things I still need to do.

Music connects us

Monday, April 1, 2019

It may surprise you, but a Board year is often spent in the Board room, typing a lot of mails and being there to talk to people. In the Board room I almost always have music on to help me stay concentrated and enjoy my day. For me the day starts as soon as I am on my bike ride to the university, almost always with my headphones on and music playing in the background. Often, a lot of people give me strange looks while I’m biking, since I usually make weird hand gestures and body movements once I listen to music.

About VeThoranen and puzzles

Usually, when people ask me what I do besides Thor, I don’t really have a clear cut answer. This is because in my first two years, I spent most of my time either doing committee work, or studying. This blog will be about what I do when Thor and Het Walhalla are not around.

Ever since I was about 5 years old, I have loved to play football (not hand-egg, that is rugby). I started to play at the local football club when I was six, and only left when I went to study here. I always enjoyed being on the pitch, so much even I became a referee for the last two years I played there.

Why the catamaran is awesome

Monday, February 25, 2019

You all know me as the Commissioner of Education, but you probably haven’t seen me during one of my favorite activities: sailing, preferably on a catamaran.

At the age of 7, I started sailing. I started off with a small Optimist and Catsy and later switched to the bigger catamarans. I mainly sailed at the Belgium coast where my grandparents have an apartment. I used to go to a sailing camp for one week every year from the age of 8 until 15. Now, whenever I go on vacation to the south and I am close to a sea, I always hire a catamaran and go out sailing a few times.
